The two largest container companies in the world decided to stop moving their containers through the Red Sea after the Houthis in Yemen increased their attacks and caused fires on board ships there.

The Danish company Maersk and the German Hapag Lloyd have banned container ships from passing through the Bab al-Mandab strait, now considered a dangerous area for shipping. The Maersk company announced that it is "deeply concerned about the situation in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and that attacks against ships threaten shipping security."

Hapag Lloyd, which controls more than seven percent of the world's containers, announced that it will stop transporting containers through the Red Sea until Monday (tomorrow), after which a new decision will be made.

On Friday, the Houthis attacked two ships and threatened a third. The ship "Al Jarash," flying a Liberian flag, was attacked by an anti-tank missile near Bab Al Mandab, an American military source told War Zone, the attack causing a fire that was extinguished without casualties.

The second ship, also a Liberian, "Platinum 3," was attacked by two Houthi cruise missiles; one missed, and the other hit the ship and caused a fire.

The U.S. Navy destroyer Mason responded but was called back to her course. It is noted that it is not clear if these three ships had any connection to Israel.

Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarai said that the Yemeni army has assured all ships of safe sailing, except for the ships that sail to Israeli ports.
