GFID Conference: Fighting in the digital age, fighting against terrorist groups, fighting in a closed environment

The GFID International Ground Forces Conference has opened today at the Armored Corps Memorial Site in Latrun. Dozens of new weapons systems are on display in a huge exhibition held alongside the conference

Fighting in the digital age, fighting against terrorist groups, fighting in a closed environment – above and below the ground – These are some of the topics that will be discussed by leading experts from Israel and abroad, most of them senior officers, in the large International Ground Forces Conference held between the 5th and 6th of May, 2015, at the  Latrun Armored Corps Memorial Site. The conference is organized by the Armored Corps Association in cooperation with Israel Defense.

Dozens of delegations from around the world, foreign military attaches, arrived to Latrun to attend the conference. Several sessions will emphasize the lessons of Operation Protective Edge of last summer. Over 2,000 people have already guaranteed their participation in the conference and large exhibition.

As mentioned, outside the lecture hall visitors can find one the largest ground exhibitions ever seen: the major defense industries are exhibiting a wide range of solutions for ground warfare. At the exhibition area, Centurion and Sherman tanks from the history of Israeli armored warfare are mixed with nearly futuristic vehicles, robots for demining and cleaning axes, advanced munitions, UAV payloads, electronic control and command systems, small arms, rotorcraft, quadcopters and means for gathering intelligence on the battlefield.

Last night, at the opening cocktail party held at the Carlton Hotel, participants listened to a lecture by Maj. Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror, who drew a worrisome, gloomy and pessimistic picture of the current situation in the Middle East, including the Iranian nuclear threat. Amidror is convinced that a bad agreement with Iran will lead to a future nuclear arms race in the Middle East, in which Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey will take part. His conclusion – Israel is committed, has been committed in the past and will be committed in the future – to protect itself, by itself.
