The German Army is presenting the upgraded S1 version of the Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) at the Eurosatory 2024 exhibition currently taking place in Paris. This upgraded version includes the Multirole-capable Light Missile System (MELLS), the German Army designation for Rafael's Spike LR.

According to Janes, the highlight of this display is the counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) DedroneSensor RF-300, manufactured by the German company Dedrone. Mounted on the Puma S1, this system is designed to passively detect, classify, and locate commercial unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their remote-control signals. During a demonstration for the German Army, the system successfully detected a swarm of nine drones before the Puma's weapon station neutralized them.

Three years ago, Rheinmetall and KMW won a contract from the German Army worth over €1 billion to upgrade 154 Puma vehicles, with an option to upgrade an additional 143 Puma vehicles for €820 million. In addition to the anti-tank missile launcher system, the upgrade also includes enhanced sensors, such as a new driver's vision system, and an improved command-and-control architecture.
