The first batch of M1117 Armored Security Vehicles (ASVs) has arrived in Ukraine as part of American aid to the country. According to reports from the Ukrainian news site Militarnyi, footage shared by the 425th Separate Assault Battalion Skala on social media shows the battalion conducting a training exercise with a US-manufactured M1117 wheeled armored vehicle.

These M1117 ASVs are part of a $400 million US government military aid package known as the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), announced in November 2022. The package includes the supply of 250 refurbished M1117 ASVs, 1,110 Phoenix Ghost drones, 45 T-72 tanks, and riverboats.

Manufactured by Textron Marine & Land Systems and adopted by the US Armed Forces in 2001, the 4×4 armored vehicles, also known as Guardians, have seen action for US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. They were designed to protect against small arms fire and threats from mines.

The M1117 ASVs sent to Ukraine are equipped with a modular expandable armor package from IBD Deisenroth Engineering and can accommodate between four and five people, including the driver and weapon operator. They are also fitted with a one-man turret armed with a 40mm automatic grenade launcher and a .50-caliber machine gun.
