Israeli company UVision and Germany’s Rheinmetall has secured an order from Hungary for Hero Loitering Munitions. Contracts to this effect have now been signed. The munitions are worth a figure in the low three-digit million-euro range. Delivery will begin in 2024 and is scheduled to end in 2025.

The Hero loitering munitions is a family of operationally proven, widely used effectors which Rheinmetall fabricates and markets in Europe under a cooperation agreement with UVision Air Ltd. of Israel. In October 2021 Rheinmetall and UVision embarked on a strategic partnership aimed at addressing sharply increased demand for remotely controlled precision munitions.

In December 2022, representatives of the two companies said that they are going to jointly develop a new loitering munition system, the Hero-R, which can be launched from a vehicle-mounted launcher and stay in the air for about 10 minutes. The system will have 2 models weighing 1.5 kg and 2.5 kg, with a variety of munitions, such as explosive munitions, shrapnel, and armor-piercing munitions.

The HERO-R loitering munition is designed to cover a combat sector of a platoon and its effectiveness will be the same as that of an anti-tank missile or a machine gun on an armored combat vehicle for attacking targets, including hidden targets. The representatives of the companies said that the system will be ready for customer evaluation at the end of 2023, so it is possible that this system will also be supplied to Hungary.
