The authorities of Sudan thwarted an attempted coup and the situation is under control, a member of the country's ruling body, the Sovereign Council, told Reuters.

An investigation of the suspects involved in the attempted coup on Monday is supposed to begin, and the military will issue a statement soon.

A government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the attempted coup included an attempt to seize control of the state-run radio station in Omdurman.

The source also said that the military used tanks to close the bridge linking Khartoum to Omdurman early Tuesday morning.

Sudan has been ruled under a power-sharing agreement between the military and civilians since the overthrow of then President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.
