Russian Army chooses the 'Udav' as its next service pistol

Tens of thousands of the pistols are expected to be purchased under the deal worth $5.4 million

The Russian Army has chosen the "Udav" pistol made by Russian company TsNIITochMash, part of the Rostec State Corporation, as its next service pistol, with deliveries scheduled to begin at the end of 2023. The Firearm Blog website reported that the pistol is going to be available in two versions: the 6P72 for combined-arms formations and 6P72-1 for the Special Forces. Up to several tens of thousands of the pistols will be purchased under the deal worth $5.4 million, according to the report.

The "Udav" is intended to replace the "Makarov", which has been in service since 1951 and remains the Russian Army's most commonly-used pistol. Another pistol used by Russian troops is the 9x18mm caliber APS Stechkin, which also has been in service since 1951, and is mainly used by the Special Forces.
