Gadi Eisenkot promoted to lieutenant general – IDF's 21th Chief of Staff
At a ceremony held at the Prime Minister's Residence, Maj. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot was promoted to lieutenant general and sworn in as IDF Chief of Staff, replacing Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, who is retiring after 37 years of military service

Major General Gadi Eisenkot was promoted to lieutenant general, before being sworn in as head of the IDF, at a ceremony held at the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem. With that, Lieutenant General Benny Gantz officially exits office and will retire from the IDF after 37 years of service.
Eisenkot, 54, joined the IDF in 1978, to the Golani Brigade. He served as an officer in the 51th battalion during the First Lebanon War. He was later appointed commander of the brigade and during the IDF's withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000 served as military secretary to then-prime minister Ehud Barak. In 2003 he was appointed commander of the Judea and Samaria Division, at the height of the second intifada. During the 2006 Second Lebanon War, Eisenkot served as head of the General Staff Operations Directorate. Then he went on to become the GOC Northern Command and later on the deputy chief of staff.
