The government of Lebanon has approved a new strategy for its maritime security, including dealing with threats to its underwater communication cables and ensuring the security of maritime access routes to Lebanon.

The strategy document calls for strengthening maritime borders and improving surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities at sea. The document includes a commitment from the European Union to allocate two million euros for maritime security preservation in Lebanon.

The European Union has expressed readiness to assist Lebanon in dealing with large numbers of illegal migrants attempting to reach Europe and passing through Lebanese waters.

Breaking Defense reports that the strategy document also includes the development of capabilities for conducting sea rescue operations and dealing with electronic disruptions and signal interference.

Nazih Baroudi, former commander of the Lebanese Navy, stated that the European Union has committed to assisting in the technical implementation of all plans and will provide training and support. According to him, proper equipping of the Lebanese Navy is essential for maritime security.

Recently, the Lebanese navy has taken several steps to enhance security, such as constructing several observation towers along the coast, acquiring three patrol boats and inflatable boats, all part of the American assistance to Lebanon.
