More than 35 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured last night in an Israeli Air Force strike on a tent compound in the Tel Al-Sultan neighborhood, west of Rafah city, where tens of thousands of displaced people from Rafah are residing.

Large fires broke out at the site, and Palestinian displaced persons were killed inside their tents. Ambulances transported the injured to hospitals in the Gaza Strip and Al-Arish.

Israel is investigating the circumstances of the airstrike, amid concerns about the repercussions shortly after the decisions of the Hague Tribunal and opposition in the US and worldwide to the IDF's advances in Rafah.

The IDF spokesperson stated that the Air Force used precise munitions in the strike to avoid harming non-combatants and is investigating whether any non-combatants were indeed harmed. The strike was based on prior intelligence indicating that Hamas operatives were using this tent compound, according to Brigadier General Danny Hagari.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa claimed the death toll was 40, while news agencies Reuters and AP reported more than 35 dead and dozens injured.

Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri described last night's strike as a "massacre" and accused the US of supplying weapons to Israel. The Red Cross has received casualties at a field hospital operating in the area.
