Israel at War, Day 65: IDF Continues Offensive as US Nudges for End Date

At the same time, the Biden administration continues showing its support for Israel by requesting Congress to approve the sale of 45,000 tank missiles and vetoing a UN resolution

Alongside the intense fighting of the IDF soldiers in the Gaza Strip, the struggle for the ceasefire continues. When will the IDF achieve the war's objectives? Weeks, months, when will the fighting end? The Americans want to know. Not exerting pressure, not setting deadlines, but they are asking the Prime Minister to tell them when.

“Months, and perhaps more,” was what Israel’s National Security Council head, Tzahi Hanegbi, said over the weekend. The Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, stated that over 7000 terrorists have been killed so far and that Israel needs to bring back the hostages while carrying on with the fighting. He added that more and more terrorists are surrendering and that Israel will continue the war until the objectives are achieved.

IDF Spokesperson Daniel Hagari, said yesterday that the situation of the Hamas field operatives is difficult, while its leadership is disconnected. The IDF and the Shin Bet continue working to bring back the 137 captives.

Yesterday, the IDF announced the names of five more soldiers who fell in battles, while 15 were seriously injured. An operation by a special forces unit to rescue a hostage from inside Gaza had failed.

About the northern front, Hanegbi stated: 'We cannot tolerate Hezbollah's Radwan force sitting beyond the border. We will need to act to enable the residents of the northern communities to return to their homes.”

Back to Gaza: In the Shejaiya neighborhood, soldiers from the Kfir Brigade eliminated a group of terrorist operatives. Paratroopers discovered several underground tunnels, one of which had an elevator installed.

An infantry force located and destroyed a tunnel entrance, while a unit from the Golani Brigade identified an armed terrorist cell approaching their position. An airstrike eliminated the cell. Israel’s Navy targeted a building where ground forces identified several terrorists.

In a school, another combat force found a teddy bear in which sniper rifles and ammunition were concealed. In another educational institution, an explosive device was discovered hidden in an UNRWA bag in a classroom.

The Biden administration is seeking congressional approval to sell 45,000 tank shells to Israel. Sources in Washington indicated that the request is valued at over $500 million and is not part of the larger $110.5 billion aid package for Israel and Ukraine, a deal currently under discussion in the Senate and House Foreign Affairs Committees.

On Friday, the US vetoed a resolution in the United Nations Security Council calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. The proposal was submitted by the United Arab Emirates. Thirteen members voted in favor, and the United Kingdom abstained. Before the vote, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a looming global threat of war between Israel and Hamas.

The US and Israel oppose a ceasefire in the fighting, fearing it may benefit Hamas. Meanwhile, Washington supports truces to protect Gaza civilians and release Israeli hostages. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to President Biden for casting the U.S. veto on the resolution in the Security Council.

Reuters announced that its correspondent, Issam Abdallah, was killed in Lebanon by IDF fire on the 13th of the month. Israel responded that the incident occurred within a combat zone, and the IDF is investigating.

According to the news agency Hezbollah attacked, and an IDF unit fired back to prevent an infiltration attempt into Israeli territory. Reuters said that an Israeli tank crew shot, causing the death of the journalist Abdallah and injuring six other reporters.
