During the past few months, the IDF has been looking into the products of three companies which manufacture laser designators for small arms: HAWKEYE, by Israeli company Troya-Tech; STING, by Meprolight, another Israeli company; and AN/PEQ-15, by American manufacturer L3.

The average price of a single laser pointer is $1500-2000. However, in a deal such as the one the IDF is looking into, tens of thousands of units are involved and so the price is expected to be around $1000 dollars per piece. Meaning, a purchase of 10,000 units will reach the value of at least 10 million dollars.

At the current stage, the IDF is conducting professional examinations, while the procurement procedure is expected to be done with a single supplier or by using US aid provided to Israel through the Ministry of Defense’s US delegation.

Judging from market evaluations , no competitive tender is expected. In this method, the IDF chooses in advance what it wants and MoD's Department of Production and Procurement (DOPP) manages the procurement procedure with the supplier.

IDF spokesperson's response: “These days, the operational need is characterized by increasing the scope of designators while improving the performance of those designators. After the approval phase required by the IDF, the issue will be transferred to the Ministry of Defense, which is in charge of the contracting process.”
