Egypt ordered from Italy two new FREMM Bergamini-class frigates in exchange for 1.2 billion Euros. The contract was signed in August, and the Egyptian Navy will receive the first frigate by the end of the year and the second one next year. The frigates are manufactured by the Fincantieri shipbuilding group.

According to the Defense World website, the media in Italy reported that Egypt is to order two more frigates for its combat fleet, and is showing interest in acquiring patrol boats from the same company.

FREMM is an Italian-French enterprise for building a new generation of frigates. The vessels that Egypt ordered have a displacement of 6,500 tons, are 144 meters long and have a top speed of over 27 knots.
