During the Singapore Airshow, taking place this week, Rafael unveiled its air defense system, designed to provide protection for mobile ground forces. According to the demonstration at the exhibition, the system can be installed on various types of armored Personnel Carrier (APC) – wheeled or tracked.
In fact, this is a new application of the "Spider" missile defense system, marketed by Raphael for several years. The system itself is based on the conversion of advanced air-to-air missiles configuration to ground to air.
According to Yossi Horowitz from Rafael, the new system allows the "Spider" to be in constant motion and does not require a battery deployment, which is customary to air defense system. "The system gathers data on the target while moving and command-and-control (CAC) systems process is. When the launcher receives an alert from the system – it halts for a short time, launches a rocket, and then moves on with the force," says Horowitz.
There are two optional angles for launching: either 45 or 85 degrees, depending on the target's location and the position of the mobile "Spyder".
